Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is this service free to use?
Are my images uploaded to any server?
What image formats can I convert?
Can I convert multiple images at once?
Is there a file size limit for the images I can convert?
How does the JPG Image Quality slider works?
The quality slider ranges from 0 (highest compression, lowest quality) to 100 (lowest compression, highest quality).
A lower value will result in a smaller file size but may reduce image detail.
A higher value will result in high quality image but may increase file size.
A common starting point is around 70 to 85 for a good balance.
What is the best quality setting to use?
What does the 'DCT Method' option refer to?
DCT, or Discrete Cosine Transform, is a core mathematical process in JPEG compression. This setting allows you to choose the algorithm used.
- Fast (default): Prioritizes conversion speed. It is highly efficient and produces excellent results for most images.
- Accurate: Prioritizes image quality and detail retention over speed. The difference is often subtle but may be beneficial for images with very fine details.
What is a 'Progressive' JPEG?
This option changes how the JPEG image loads in a web browser.
- Baseline (unchecked, default): The image loads from top to bottom.
- Progressive (checked): The image loads in successive waves, appearing blurry at first and gradually becoming sharper. This can improve the perceived loading speed on slow internet connections.
What is 'Chroma Subsampling'?
Chroma subsampling is a compression technique that reduces color information (chroma) more than brightness information (luma), taking advantage of the fact that human vision is less sensitive to color shifts than to changes in brightness. This significantly reduces file size with minimal perceived loss of quality.
- 4:4:4: No subsampling. All color information is preserved. This provides the highest quality but the largest file size.
- 4:2:2: Reduces color information by half horizontally.
- 4:2:0 (default): Reduces color information by half both horizontally and vertically. This offers the best compression and is the standard for web images.
- Grayscale: Removes all color information, resulting in a black and white image.
- (Other options like 4:4:0, 4:1:1, 4:4:1 are specialized formats for specific use cases.)
